MILLENNIAL. Director's Statement
Welcome to “MILLENNIAL”, the sixth film in the HUMAN CONCEPTS series. This short film is about the experience of being a millennial in the 21st century. The generation raised to believe we could be the heroes of a brighter future. Those who grew up with promises of global unity and global solutions, only to find a world fractured by rising costs, unstable economies, and shifting societal expectations. MILLENNIAL is a reflection of this dissonance, capturing the shared frustrations and existential crises that define our time.
We are the generation that stepped into a workforce that wasn’t ready for us. We’re told to dream big, but many of us can’t afford basic necessities like housing. The world we were prepared for by our parents no longer exists, and the one we live in now feels increasingly chaotic. In MILLENNIAL, each visual metaphor and each frame, is designed to encapsulate a shared emotion, feeling, or experience: the anxiety of becoming an adult while enduring the struggle to find meaning.
I leaned into an expressionistic approach for this film, combining imagery and sound to mirror the chaos of millennial life. An aggressive, percussion-driven soundtrack underscores this, adding rhythm to the narrative of frustration, resilience, and self-discovery. This generation was shaped by a media landscape that promised us everything, and now we’re watching it evolve beyond our recognition, further complicating our place in it.
As someone who identifies with this generation, I made MILLENNIAL as honestly as I could. I tried to remain true to my taste, my emotions, and my interpretation of what it means to be a member of this generation. I hope every millennial watching this will see themselves in its frames and feel less alone in their struggles. I hope it sparks reflection and a shared understanding of what it means to grow up in this time of immense transformation.
Thank you for taking the time to watch MILLENNIAL. This project is part of an ongoing series, and more HUMAN CONCEPTS films are on their way. It’s a journey that continues to challenge and inspire me, and I’m excited to share it with all of you.
From Barcelona with love,
Andrés.
